Wolves Stage Thrilling Comeback to Defeat In-Form Southampton 3-2

Southampton 2 Wolves 3 18th January 2020

Wolves overcame a difficult first half to secure a stunning victory over Southampton, who were chasing their sixth win in seven games. A dominant second-half display saw Nuno Espirito Santo’s side turn the game around, snatching all three points at St Mary’s in thrilling fashion.

The match began poorly for Wolves, as Southampton struck first in the 15th minute. Jan Bednarek capitalized on a James Ward-Prowse free kick, firing home from 12 yards to give the hosts an early 1-0 advantage. Things worsened in the 35th minute when Shane Long extended the Saints’ lead, heading in to make it 2-0 after some excellent buildup play.

Wolves entered halftime facing a steep deficit, with manager Nuno needing to rally his team. Whatever was said during the break worked wonders, as Wolves emerged in the second half with renewed energy and a sense of purpose. They dominated possession and created chances, which paid off in the 53rd minute. Raul Jimenez fed Adama Traore down the right flank, who delivered a pinpoint cross for Pedro Neto. Neto expertly controlled the ball and finished coolly, halving the deficit to 2-1. A brief VAR review confirmed the goal stood.

The dramatic equalizer came in the 65th minute, courtesy of VAR intervention. Jonny was brought down in the box by Jack Stephens, with the referee initially dismissing calls for a penalty. However, VAR overruled, awarding Wolves the spot-kick. Raul Jimenez took responsibility and calmly slotted the penalty home, leveling the score at 2-2 with 25 minutes remaining.

Wolves completed their remarkable turnaround in the 76th minute. Traore once again caused problems for the Southampton defense, bursting down the right before finding Jimenez in the box. The Mexican striker showed composure and power, blasting the ball into the net to seal a memorable 3-2 comeback victory for Wolves.

Southampton, who had looked in control during the first half, will rue their missed opportunity. Wolves, however, can celebrate an extraordinary performance, especially in the second half, which showcased their resilience and attacking quality.
