LOUIE LEFEVRE BRINGS YOU THE LATEST ACADEMY NEWS ON CHEM CAMPBELL AND Filozofe Mabete

Chem Campbell’s time with Wolves has come to an end as the winger leaves on a free transfer to join Stevenage.

The move sees the former Wales U17 international finish his spell in old gold after nine years. Campbell spent time on loan with Wycombe Wanderers, Charlton Athletic and Reading in League One, the same division he now joins Stevenage in.

Once eyed by European giants when aged just 17, Campbell has not quite hit the heights that had been predicted, but still just 22-years-old he has time to deliver on his potential still.

His contract was not due to expire until the end of next season, but Wolves have agreed an early termination to allow Chem to move on a free, though a sell-on clause has been included in the move should Stevenage profit from the Welshman.

Campbell goes down in the history books as Wolves’ second youngest ever player (behind only Jimmy Mullen) after Nuno Espirito Santo handed Chem his senior debut in October 2019, aged just 16, in a League Cup tie with Aston Villa. He would not make his Premier League debut until 2022 as a substitute away to Newcastle United. He made 8 senior appearances across his time at Wolves, including 6 in the Premier League.

Campbell was a star at youth level for Wolves, amassing 49 PL2 appearances with 23 goal contributions across his time in the academy. Campbell was a member of the U21 side that reached the final of the PL Cup back in 2022, whilst also being promoted from the PL2 division 2. His final U21 appearance came in August 2023 against Stoke City. It is a shame that Campbell has not been able to become the player once hoped at Molineux, but now Chem has the chance to establish himself at a new permanent home.

Filozofe Mabete has also wasted no time in finding a new club after his release. He became one of two new signings for Swindon Town yesterday alongside former Leeds United midfielder Joe Snowdon.

Mabete will now have a chance to make his senior debut in League two next season, having signed a two-year deal with the Robins. Hopefully he can impress manager Ian Holloway and establish himself as a regular at the County Ground.
