KARL WHITEHOUSE REPORTS ON WOLVES 2-0 WIN AGAINST SOUTHAMPTON
This is what you call a six-pointer against Southampton in the clash of the bottom two at Molineux. Gary O’Neil made one change from the last game against Crystal Palace, bringing in Mario Lemina for Tommy Doyle.
What a start for Wolves! Matheus Cunha slipped a lovely ball to Pablo Sarabia, who rounded Aaron Ramsdale in the Southampton goal for an open goal, giving Wolves a great start in this must-win game.
This was Wolves’ fastest goal in the Premier League, scored in one minute and 48 seconds.
Pablo Sarabia picked up some sort of injury after scoring and is being monitored by Wolves’ staff. Jean Ricner Bellegarde is ready to come on if needed.
Southampton thought they had equalised through Manning, only for VAR to intervene, ruling a foul by Mateus Fernandes on Nelson Semedo in the build-up. The referee, after reviewing the screen, disallowed the goal.
Wolves, holding the lead, have been passive since scoring. They need a second goal to try to put Southampton out of sight.
Matheus Cunha is having a great game; his runs are causing problems for the Saints’ defenders.
Southampton are starting to get back into the game with chances of their own, so Wolves must be careful not to concede with this fragile lead.
We are playing too deep since scoring, as Southampton’s press is causing us issues.
Jose Sa, who has gone down in his box, seems okay, and the game resumes.
As the game stretched, both sides had periods of play. Wolves tried to get another goal when Joao Gomes made a great run towards the Southampton goal, sending a ball to Pablo Sarabia, only for Mateus Fernandes to dispossess him in the Southampton defence.
A Southampton corner near the end of the first half almost brought the equaliser, but it went narrowly wide from the far post.
With six minutes added to the first half, Joao Gomes fouled Adam Lallana, giving Southampton a free kick in a dangerous position. Mateus Fernandes fired wide of the goal, a lucky escape for Wolves.
Half-time arrives with Wolves leading 1-0. We have been incredibly lucky to be ahead despite having only 29% possession.
Half-Time: Wolves 1, Southampton 0.
The second half kicks off with both sides making substitutions. Jean Ricner Bellegarde comes on for Pablo Sarabia, possibly due to the early injury, while Tyler Dibling replaces Ryan Manning, likely a tactical change for Southampton.
Joao Gomes had a brilliant chance after being set up by Totti Gomes, but it went straight at goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale.
Wolves got the second goal we needed when Mario Lemina passed to Matheus Cunha, who scored his fifth goal of the season from 25 yards out, hitting the top corner. We really needed that goal, and there were complaints from Aaron Ramsdale, who ran out of his goal towards the referee, claiming there were fouls in the build-up, and he received a booking for his troubles.
Wolves are now dominating this game and need to keep playing like this to put it further out of reach.
The second half has seen us more attacking with a better press.
Approaching the hour mark, Wolves are doing everything to put the game out of Southampton’s reach, while Southampton’s shooting has been wide of the mark.
On the hour mark, Southampton made two changes, switching to a 3-4-3 formation to try and get back into the game.
Matheus Cunha played a good ball to Jean Ricner Bellegarde, who attempted to pass to Jorgen Strand Larsen, but it was too high for him to reach. Wolves continue their attack on the Southampton goal.
Wolves brought on Gonçalo Guedes for Jorgen Strand Larsen to add some fresh legs for the final part of the game.
Southampton have now used their last two substitutes, trying to chase the game they are behind in.
With Ramsdale out of goal, Jean Ricner Bellegarde had a shot from distance that went narrowly wide. What a goal that would have been—so unlucky.
As the game neared its end, Wolves were still creating chances, with Ait Nouri making runs into the box, causing issues for the Southampton defence.
Wolves played deep as we entered injury time, seeing the game out in their own half.
Wolves made a late substitution to try and see it out by taking off Matheus Cunha, who has been excellent today, and bringing on Rodrigo Gomes.
Rayan Ait Nouri made a run, hitting a ball across the goal with no one there to make contact and put it in the net.
In the last minute of the game, Rayan Ait Nouri came off, and Matt Doherty came on to help run down the clock.
Wolves held on to win their first Premier League match. Hopefully, this bodes well for the rest of the season.
Full Time: Wolves 2, Southampton 0.
This is a massive boost for a Wolves side that needed this win after the start to this season. It’s also our first clean sheet since February. We can only hope this run continues, as it will give Gary more time to sort out the issues we have and also boost the players’ confidence for the upcoming games after the international break.
