Bristol City 1 Wolves 2 30th December 2017

Championship leaders Wolverhampton Wanderers secured a dramatic late victory against an in-form Bristol City, winning 2-1 in a thrilling encounter. Ryan Bennett delivered the decisive blow with a stoppage-time header, extending Wolves’ lead at the top of the table to 10 points.

The match, filled with intensity and controversy, saw both sides reduced to 10 men. Wolves’ captain Danny Batth received an early red card for a challenge on Hordur Magnusson, followed shortly by Bobby Reid giving Bristol City a 1-0 lead. However, Wolves equalized through Barry Douglas’ sublime free-kick after City goalkeeper Frank Fielding was dismissed for a foul on Matt Doherty.

With the game locked at 1-1, Wolves pushed relentlessly. Late in stoppage time, Ryan Bennett headed home Douglas’ pinpoint delivery, claiming all three points for the visitors. Despite the setback, Bristol City remains third in the Championship, illustrating their strong campaign so far.

This victory cemented Wolves’ dominance in the race for promotion while showcasing their resilience in high-pressure situations.

Bristol City 1 Wolves 6 7th November 1998

Wolverhampton Wanderers delivered a stunning 6-1 victory over Bristol City at Ashton Gate on November 7, 1998, in a match full of twists and milestones. The emphatic performance marked Colin Lee’s debut as Wolves’ caretaker manager, just days after the sacking of Mark McGhee. Despite entering the clash battling relegation fears, Wolves produced their best performance of the season.

Bristol City struck first through Carl Hutchings, but Wolves quickly responded. Guy Whittingham leveled the score before David Connolly’s long-awaited first goal for the club broke his 15-match drought. Wolves dominated the game, with further goals from Simon Osborn, Kevin Muscat, Connolly again, and substitute Carl Robinson sealing the historic win.

With free-flowing, attacking football, Wolves scored six goals in a league match for the first time since 1992. This resounding victory also provided statistical milestones, including their biggest away league win since 1955. The result provided a morale boost for Wolves and delivered a nightmare start for Bristol City’s new director of football, Benny Lennartsson.

Fans will remember this match for its remarkable turnaround, unexpected dominance, and even a bizarre halftime clash involving Wolfie and three pigs, which added to the spectacle of an unforgettable day.
