Setting the scene

Wolves drew 2-2 with Shrewsbury Town in the earlier tie on 26 January 2019, thanks to a late Matt Doherty equaliser. That result brought the replay back to Molineux.

First half

Wolves made the perfect start. From kick off, they took the lead when a Gibbs-White corner caused problems. Saiss got a touch, and Doherty reacted first to fire the loose ball into the net after sloppy defending from Shrewsbury Town.

Shrewsbury responded quickly. A Norburn corner was not dealt with, and Bolton headed into an empty net after poor defending from Wolves.

The game then turned on its head. Shrewsbury went in front when Laurent broke quickly, caught the Wolves defence out, and finished calmly to make it 2-1.

Wolves hit back right before the break. In stoppage time, Doherty scored his second with a header at the back post after a cross from Otto, with goalkeeper Arnold unable to claim it.

Half time: Wolves 2 Shrewsbury Town 2

Second half

The second half was quieter, but Wolves regained the lead just after the hour. Cavaleiro scored the third after a pass from Doherty ran past Waterfall, allowing Cavaleiro to poke the ball past the advancing Arnold.

Shrewsbury applied late pressure as they searched for another equaliser to force extra time, but Wolves held firm. Wolves also went close to a fourth, with Jimenez denied by a fine save from Arnold.

Full time: Wolves 3 Shrewsbury Town 2

Conclusion

Wolves progressed to the next round of the FA Cup and set up a fifth-round tie against Bristol City.
