Wolves started the game brightly, forcing Brentford goalkeeper Raya into several early saves.

The home side took the lead in the 27th minute. Costa led a counter-attack, moving the ball down the pitch before playing it to Toti on the left wing. Toti’s low cross, aided by a deflection off Norgaard, found its way back to Costa, who finished to score his first goal for Wolves.

Brentford responded with some pressure in the first half, but could not produce any shots on target.

After the break, both teams attacked, aiming either to extend Wolves’ lead or equalize. Brentford managed their first shot on target after 66 minutes, through Wissa, but the score remained 1-0.

Soon after, Wolves doubled their lead. Nunes raced down the right, got past Janelt and Henry, and crossed the ball. A deflection off Pinnock sent the ball loose in the box, where Hwang finished to make it 2-0.

Brentford had late chances through Janelt and Toney, but Wolves held on for a clean sheet and a vital win.

Wolves 2-1 Brentford 28th December 2013

There was plenty of drama, controversy, and own goals in this memorable match. Wolves started strongly and took the lead after just seven minutes. Dicko, who looked to be in an offside position during the build-up, was fed by a precise ball. He outpaced the Brentford defense and slotted a low shot past Button to make it 1-0. The decision to let the goal stand sparked controversy.

Both sides created chances throughout. Wolves aimed to extend their lead, while Brentford pushed for an equalizer.

In the second half, Wolves found a second goal with 18 minutes left. Van La Parra hit the crossbar, and McDonald’s rebound struck Tarkowski, deflecting into his own net for an own goal that made it 2-0.

Wolves were reduced to 10 men after a late tackle, giving Brentford a boost. Brentford pulled one back late when Batth accidentally turned a low cross from Bidwell into his own net, making the final minutes tense.

In stoppage time, Gray hit the post as Brentford nearly drew level, but Wolves held on for the win.
