Do you remember our first home win in Premier League against Brighton and Hove Albion?

Wolves 2 Brighton and Hove Albion 1 9th May 2021

This match was played behind closed doors due to Covid-19 restrictions.

Wolves made five changes from their previous outing against West Brom. Ki-Jana Hoever, Max Kilman, Joao Moutinho, Daniel Podence, and Morgan Gibbs-White came into the starting lineup. Nelson Semedo, Romain Saiss, Leander Dendoncker, and Adama Traore dropped to the bench, while Owen Otasowie missed out due to a knock.

Brighton only made one change following their 2-0 win over Leeds, with Alireza Jahanbakhsh replacing Joel Veltman.

Hoever, Kilman, and Gibbs-White featured in a Wolves starting eleven for the first time in months, but all looked sharp in the early stages. Wolves moved the ball quickly and showed renewed confidence, with Rayan Ait-Nouri combining well with Podence to create a chance for Vitinha. Brighton’s goalkeeper, Robert Sanchez, was called into action to push Vitinha’s shot wide.

Wolves dominated possession for the first ten minutes and played with intent, but familiar set-piece issues soon returned. In the 13th minute, Lewis Dunk lost his marker and headed home from a corner to give Brighton the lead.

Gibbs-White was left marking the much taller Dan Burn, but managed to prevent further trouble on that occasion. Brighton continued to threaten from set pieces, with Patricio making a key save from Dunk. Danny Welbeck set up Neal Maupay for another good chance, but Maupay volleyed over. Wolves finished the half without troubling Brighton’s defense, and Fabio Silva barely touched the ball up front.

Half-time: Wolves 0–1 Brighton

Wolves started the second half with renewed energy and created a few half-chances. Kilman forced a save with a low shot from distance, and Gibbs-White hit the post after making space in the box.

The game changed dramatically when Dunk was sent off for pulling down Silva, who was through on goal after a clever pass from Vitinha. Brighton were reduced to 10 men, shifting the momentum.

Nuno introduced Traore and Willian Jose, and Wolves quickly took advantage. Traore broke into the box, played a sharp one-two with Silva, and fired past Sanchez for the equalizer.

Dendoncker replaced Vitinha late on. Wolves pressed for a winner and nearly got it when Traore’s pressure won the ball from Sanchez, and he squared for Gibbs-White, but the finish flew high over the bar. It looked like a costly miss, but deep into injury time, Gibbs-White curled a shot into the top corner, sealing the comeback and celebrating with a huge smile.

Brighton’s frustrations boiled over after the final whistle, with Maupay sent off for dissent following an argument with the referee.

HISTORY – WOLVES V BRIGHTON

Do you remember the first ever win against Brighton?

Wolves 2 Brighton 0 28th December 1991

The first chance of the game started from a header from Madden towards Mutch who then laid it off to Thompson who then went on a run and then passed it onto Bull whose shot saved by Beeney for a Wolves corner.

From the resulting corner from Birch, it found its way to the middle of the Brighton box and there was Burke to get his first Wolves goal to make it 1-0.

Then Wolves made it 2-0 after a brilliant cross from Cook found Mutch whose header put the ball into the back of the net great play by Wolves.

Second half Wolves had chances in the game with Birch having a shot that went narrowly wide of the goal and Bull had a moment with just the goalkeeper to beat despite having Brighton players around him and saved by Beeney in the Brighton goal.
