WATCH FOR OUR THOUGHTS ON JAMES COLLINS PRESS CONFERENCE

Wolves head into Stamford Bridge with an interim at the wheel, a squad seeking clarity, and a manager search bubbling away in the background. Under-21 coach James Collins fronted the media with a calm, measured tone and a clear message for players and fans alike. Expect focus on basics, a lift in belief, and a reminder that there is still plenty of football to play.

James Collins takes the helm for the interim role

Collins spoke with composure, humility and a coach’s pride. He explained that while this might be a short-term stint, the work is no different to any other week he has led a group.

“I’ve prepared lots of teams. I’m a coach. We take great professional pride in preparing teams for games, and this is no different.”

His approach for the week was practical and people-focused:

  • He spoke to players and support staff about what they need, what they want and what feels missing.
  • He narrowed the focus to three or four key areas, given the time constraint.
  • Early feedback from the squad has been positive, with small, sensible tweaks already landing well.

He praised the group’s attitude, noting how open they have been to ideas. The players have been absolutely fantastic with us all week… they’ve been really, really great. That ties to his wider point about building trust and simplicity, rather than flooding the week with changes nobody can absorb.

Reflections on Vitor Pereira’s departure

Collins kept things respectful on Vitor Pereira. He said Pereira was always pleasant with him, that he learned from him, and that he was warm with the staff. He wished him well.

There was also a quiet acknowledgement of how the mood changed during the long stretch without wins. Pereira was bubbly when he arrived, then results drained that spark. In contrast, Collins’ style is understated. It is about the work, clarity, and the next match.

Squad mindset and motivation

Collins delivered a timely reminder about perspective. After 10 games, plenty outside the club have written Wolves off. He does not see it that way. There are 28 games left and 90 points to play for. The shape of a season can change very quickly if belief and habits return.
