Liam berry shares his player ratings formanchester united 2-0 wolves

Wolves were delivered a final blow by Alejandro Garnacho in the final minutes, after conceding to Anthony Martial in the first half due to a mistake at the back. In what was a bit of  goalkeeping masterclass and attacking disaster-class, let’s take a look at the individual players and mark their performances out of 10:

Daniel Bentley - 9 & MAN OF THE MATCH

On his first Premier League performance, Bentley did not fail to impress. The January signing made eight saves, four of which came from close range inside the box. Fans have been calling for him to get some minutes, after Jose Sa’s underwhelming away performances, and he took his chance.  My man of the match by a long shot.

Nelson Semedo - 4

The full back didn’t really make an impression, and had a quiet game. His form has picked up since the arrival of Julen Lopetegui, but he was unable to make much of an impact at Old Trafford, so a four seems fair.

Craig Dawson - 6

Dawson had a decent game, and used his physicality well. He was calm on the ball and would often be seen stepping out and launching a counter-attack. Wolves actually defended well for long periods with plenty of blocks.

Maximilian Kilman - 5

Kilman had a nervy first half, making two mistakes, the first a slip and the second which led to a goal. But in the second half he was fairly solid. Again, used his physicality well and wasn’t scared to drive forward with the ball, showing that the first half blip did not affect him.

Toti Gomes - 4

Like Kilman, he had a very nervy first half, with Brazilian Antony causing him problems. Then in the second half, he was just quiet, very much like Semedo. With him not making much impact in the game, you can’t rank this performance up there with some of his more recent appearances.

Ruben Neves - 5

The captain had a quiet day by his standards, but was not bad. Bar one misplaced pass to give United a chance, he barely put a foot wrong. It was just he didn’t really influence the game going forward.  He always gives 100% every game, and with Everton at home possibly being his penultimate game in a Wolves shirt, it would be nice to see one last screamer at Molineux.

Mario Lemina - 5

Lemina had an average day, like the team, but still produced an abundance of blocks, as per usual. The energy he has brought to the team is unmatched, so let’s hope he wasn’t brought off due to the knock he got. A five for Lemina.

Matheus Nunes - 4

It’s mainly the same story with Matheus as it was for everyone, a fairly quiet day at the office. The Portuguese didn’t really have the chance to make an impact. Although he nearly had the chance to recreate the Chelsea goal in early April, to which the Wolves fans in the away end screamed ‘shoot!’, he was unable to deliver.

Pedro Neto - 3

After his very impressive performance against Villa last weekend, Neto didn’t live up to those standards on a more difficult afternoon. Often, he would pick up the ball and see that it was Aaron Wan-Bissaka marking him, and would turn around. Brought off at half time for Hwang Hee-Chan, it was a disappointing day for the winger, who at least looks to have his old energy back.

Matheus Cunha - 6

Every week he seems to adapt more and more to the league, he’s been a privilege to watch as of recent weeks. He’s a unique player that can take on a player or two, and take pressure off the defence when needed to. Not ultimately his day but still looks a threat.

Diego Costa - 5

The veteran has picked up his form recently, so it just begs the question on whether he should be given another contract? The way he presses at his age is incredible, his workrate is outstanding, but this should be a club seeking more and we should be able to get a young and hungry striker. The club needs to move forwards now, not next summer, this summer. A decision will have to be made on his future, but his performance against United was below his recent standards.  Still found time to wind the United fans up by kicking the ball against the advertising hoarding in front of them!
