WATCH FOR OUR INSTANT REACTION FOLLOWING THE FIRST WIN OF THE SEASON
After what felt like an eternity, Wolves have finally secured their long-awaited win, defeating Southampton 2-0 in a must-win Premier League fixture. The relief was palpable, and the fans couldn’t be happier. It may have taken 3,642 days (not literally, but it felt that long) to get there, but victory tastes sweet. With a solid team performance and a clean sheet, there’s a renewed energy around the club that has us all thinking: maybe, just maybe, this is the turning point we needed.
A Dream Start
You couldn’t ask for a better opening to a match when you’re desperate for a win. Sarabia, who’s had a lot of criticism coming his way recently, wasted no time in responding. In fact, it took just two minutes, as he made a composed run, rounded the keeper and slotted the ball home for a 1-0 lead. It was a perfect start, especially for a player looking to silence his critics. He had missed similar chances in past games, so it’s great to see him finally making them count.
However, that was Wolves’ only shot on target for the entirety of the first half. Southampton attempted to hit back quickly and thought they had, with a goal that was disallowed by VAR for a push. It was the right call, though, and VAR actually did its job this time.
In truth, Southampton didn’t trouble our goalkeeper, José Sá, much. They had a couple of moments, but no real danger materialised. By half-time, it stayed 1-0, though the nerves were still jangling.
The Legend Returns
As if the night couldn’t get any better, Ruben Neves made his grand return to the pitch, immediately lifting the Molineux crowd. The atmosphere was electric, with fans singing his name in appreciation. He may not have scored or assisted, but just seeing him back was enough to give everyone a lift.
The second goal, though, was special. Matheus Cunha, our number 10, put the game to bed with an excellent strike. It was a goal that had finesse, class, and a touch of Neves-like brilliance – the type of goal we’ve grown to adore. Cunha put in a top performance, constantly threatening the Southampton defence and causing problems.
Defensive Question Marks, But a Clean Sheet
Despite the clean sheet, there are still areas to tighten up at the back. Wolves let Southampton command 72% of possession, and while José Sá wasn’t tested, it’s never safe to let an opponent boss the ball for that long. Still, the defence held firm, especially when Southampton introduced some serious height late on with their giant substitute. But Wolves managed the game well after conceding a lot of set pieces, something they’ve specifically been working on during training, and it paid off.
Man of the Match
Who gets the nod for man of the match? Opinions were mixed, but for Dave, it’s hard to look past Matheus Cunha. He scored and had a chance for another too. He was sharp, aggressive, and clinical. Others, of course, had their say.
Respect for Remembrance Day
What’s worth highlighting, aside from the football, was the respectful tribute for Remembrance Day. Over 31,000 fans fell silent to honour those who’ve given their lives, and the bugler did a fantastic job. It was a reminder of what’s important, and it was heart-warming to see how well that moment was observed by all.
What’s Next for Wolves?
It’s one win, but it’s a crucial one. Gary O’Neil has been under a lot of pressure, but this result could buy him some time. Next up, Fulham and Bournemouth – two more games that could define our season. If Wolves can keep the momentum, they could go on a bit of a run. And who knows, opinions might just start to shift.
For now, though, let’s enjoy the win. After all the frustration, it’s about time we had something to celebrate.
Always Wolves. Always proud.
