WOLVES FANS SHARE THEIR THOUGHTS FOLLOWING FA CUP DEFEAT TO BOURNEMOUTH

GEORGE LAKIN

Wow. What can you say?

Defeat from the jaws of victory. Rudely awoken from another year of FA Cup dreaming.

It was becoming a nice little bit of respite, a reason to be cheerful. A competition in which it felt like everything was aligning for us. No more.

Bizarre game, was impressed with our fortitude for long periods, but in the end just feel totally deflated and let down, again. Should’ve known better.

To work so hard, to ride our luck all through extra time (relying on some fine saves from Johnstone), only to throw it away like that at the end speaks volumes about our mentality.

Cunha’s outburst, Doc’s inability to hit the target when rolling it down the middle would’ve sent us into the quarter finals. Just crazy. No composure, no conviction. Petulance and timidity all rolled into one.

Why on Earth would we self-implode like that?

The cracks are beginning to show again after it looked like Pereira had reinstated some genuine belief and professionalism.

Fingers crossed we have enough to stay up and the fact we’ve a 5 point gap -which is far more than we deserve- could be crucial.

Imperative we keep that distance between us now because what we saw today suggests we will collapse like a pack of cards if it comes to needing something on the final day.

They simply haven’t the stomach for it.

Next four without Cunha adds to the challenge. And what Pereira does from there will be interesting too. What’s the message if he’s straight back in and leant on to bail us out?

Do we have any other choice?

Tough spot for the manager but he has to get it right, he knew what he was walking into here. His man-management is about to be tested to the limit in the coming weeks.

We’re out the cup but I get the feeling our season’s not done yet. One or two ‘cup finals’ yet to come, and we simply have to navigate rough seas so much better than we did today.

This was a game different from last weekends game where we were most of the time either camped in our own half and Bournemouth exploiting our weaknesses.

Bournemouth take the lead in the game with Wolves  failing to pick up the striker and he  was left unmarked to score.

We were not in this game, we were making mistakes and not venturing forward.

Even this game had its moments with VAR taking so long with a decision where have we heard this before, and it was a distraction on how the game was panning out.

Vitor has a lot to do in this second half getting us playing as this was a poor showing for Wolves.

We start second half with a better showing with more of the ball and retention and we got  back into the game with a great equaliser from Cunha as you know what we get from him scoring a screamer.

After that we needed to make it count by pushing forward, but Bournemouth had other ideas to push us back yet again and this was the case for the rest of the game with Toti Gomes & Sam Johnstone keeping Bournemouth at bay.

in extra time Sam Johnstone kept us in the game with multiple saves as the Bournemouth press was causing us issues and  Wolves were stuck in their own half.

But we have a moment of madness from Cunha now that will hurt us for our league campaign, but question is now how many he will miss with this action.

We are taken to a shootout at the end where we took our penalties well and even had match point which was missed and then in sudden death we miss another one which proved costly and we are out of the competition for this season. This was a missed opportunity for us to go far in a competition that was wide open but Vitor will be asking questions to this set of players are we up for survival with a key player now missing in our team?

Vitor now has to get this group back together now getting this game out of the system and putting the cup run behind them and put the effort into the league game in our quest for survival.

Biggest talking point happened in 119th minute! Matheus Cunha had been being fouled from the 45th second. Bournemouth targeted him from the off!

In the first half the foul count was roughly  12 from Bournemouth to 3 from Wolves. Some of the fouls from Bournemouth were repeats and some cynical. But no yellow cards from Referee Chris Kavanagh for Bournemouth instead a harsh yellow for Joao Gomes. Both Kerkez and Huijsen could both have received yellows for persistent fouls.

Wolves went in at half time to a simple goal from Evanilson.

Wolves had found chances hard to come by with Bournemouth snapping at their heels and a high press. But a moment of magic from thirty yards by Cunha brought Wolves level.

Huijsen finally went into the book on about 63 minutes. Had he been rightly booked in the first half he’d have been off.
The four changes to the Wolves team seemed to have upset the balance of the side.

Andre and Munetsi were missed.

On 119 minutes Cunha lost it big time. Kerkez again guilty of fouling him but something triggered a reaction from Cunha. A playback of whatever was said might have explained Cunha’s reaction. Cunha rightly got a Red card for his behaviour, but the yellow card Kerkez got if he’d been booked in the first half Bournemouth would have been down to 9 men.

Penalties were lost 5-4 after Johnstone saved the fourth kick. But with a chance to win Doherty put his shot two foot wide. Traore missed his penalty and Sinistera scored to win it for Bournemouth.
I can only imagine something was said to Cunha to cause his explosive reaction.
But Bournemouth were the better side, they got their tactics right and pressed and stifled Wolves.

The downside was the ridiculous 8 minutes it took for VAR to settle the second goal. Both sets of supporters singing “it’s ruined football”.

Now Wolves must concentrate on League survival without Cunha for at least three games!

Frustrated fan.

Two trips to Bournemouth in a week, two completely different outcomes. If you’d asked me beforehand, I’d have said the league points matter most—but why not aim for both?

Cunha went from hero to zero in this one. His goal was sheer brilliance—Neves-esque—and the emotion in the away end was electric. It’s a feeling we’ve rarely experienced this season. After watching the club’s “day in the life” feature on Matheus this week, it’s clear he’s something of a perfectionist. Performances like this one, producing world-class moments, are a testament to his skill.

Throughout the game, Cunha was targeted and persistently fouled, which isn’t unusual for a team’s star player. But what was said or done to trigger his red mist in the dying seconds? We may never fully know, but the fallout is clear—it carries consequences for all of us.

With Cunha now suspended for at least three crucial games, we’ll be missing a pivotal player at a time when points are critical to widen the gap between us and the relegation zone. Losing him alongside existing injuries makes the task even harder for an already struggling squad. On top of that, the sight of multiple injuries during the game raised more concerns. Why on earth was Doherty taking a penalty if his hamstring was already an issue? Or worse, did he injure it in the act?

The away end atmosphere was phenomenal all game, but the heartbreak of yet another FA Cup dream shattered is tough to swallow.

The result itself wasn’t unexpected, Bournemouth deserved their win, but the aftermath leaves us with more questions than answers—and deeper concerns about what lies ahead.
