SEAN STANTON REVIEWS WOLVES VICTORY OVER VILLA AT MOLINEUX

Last week at the Amex was a debacle.
Call it what you want.
The roast on the coast.
The blitzkrieg at Brighton.
Let’s be honest. The Seagulls didn’t just swoop down and nick our chips. They also shat on our heads as they flew away.

How would Wolves respond against local rivals Villa ?

No recriminations from Lopetigue for last week’s horror show.
Sa and Matheus both playing. Would they repay JLo for his show of faith ?
Just two tactical changes with Bueno and Gomes out. Toti and Cunha in.

WOLVES
Sa, Semedo, Dawson, Kilman, Toti, Neves Lemina, Nunes, Neto, Cunha, Costa.

VILLA
Martinez, Young, Konsa, Mings, Morano,Traore, Luiz, Mcginn, Ramsey, Buendia, Watkins

Looking at the teams before kick off the big difference for me was the Striker’s. Watkins – Fit, young and scoring goals. Costa – Fit, old and not scoring goals.

Personally, I was still nervous and fearing relegation.

I predicted a 1-3 win for Villa.

So what happened.

Villa had the early possession but some intense pressing from Wolves resulted in a Neves corner and Toti rose beautifully to head in off the crossbar.

1-0 nine minutes gone.

Sa then produced a magnificent save to deny Buendia.

After that Wolves just seemed to sit back and invite Villa on and they spent most of the half in and around the Wolves box.

Watkins headed straight at Sa when a yard either side of him would have resulted in a goal.

Costa and Mings were both booked after a tussle.

Then in the 44th minute, off a Nunes cross, Costa chested the ball to Cunha but he couldn’t keep his shot down.

HALF TIME  Wolves 1-0 Villa

Wolves News - Wolves victory over Villa

From the restart Wolves tried to get on the front foot. Costa broke through from the left but Martinez saved his shot.

Villa surged forward and Ashley Young shot just wide.

Wolves were under pressure again. Toti and Semedo were booked.

Corners, freekicks and crosses rained in but Wolves stood strong.

Hwang came on for Cunha.

Mings blasted over from three yards out after a set piece and Buendia went close again.

Neto beat his man in the box and crossed but a slight deflection meant Hwang couldn’t quite nudge it in.

Traore, Collins and Joao came on and Wolves saw out the final few minutes with no real scares.

FINAL SCORE WOLVES 1-0 VILLA

It wasn’t pretty but it was a fantastic performance after last week’s annihilation. Total commitment from everybody.

A special mention for the two guys who took most of the stick last week, Sa and Matheus.

Sa’s first half save was superb and although Matheus didn’t contribute that much in attack he defended magnificently. Constantly chasing back and making challenges. Giving everything for the cause.

By the end of the weekends fixtures Wolves could well be mathematically safe.

Hallelujah.
