LIAM BERRY REPORTS ON WOLVES 1 LIVERPOOL 3 AT MOLINEUX
Liverpool produce a quickfire comeback at Molineux, as Wolves fall to second successive defeat.
Gary O’Neil handed Jean-Ricner Bellegarde his Wolves debut, bringing him and Hee Chan Hwang in for Fabio Silva and Pablo Sarabia. These were the only changes to the first 11 that had been beaten at Crystal Palace.
New signing Tommy Doyle was named on the bench having missed the previous fixture due to a knock.
Jurgen Klopp made three changes from the team that beat Aston Villa 3-0, with Darwin Nunez, Luis Diaz and Trent Alexander Arnold (injured) missing out. Former Wolves forward Diogo Jota, Cody Gakpo and youngster Jarell Quansah came in as the replacements.
Match Report
Wolves made a lively start. New signing Bellegarde picked the ball up in a wide area and took the ball past multiple Liverpool players, winning his team a corner in the opening stages.
Their next chance came on the counter, Pedro Neto setting off and weaving his way through a tight gap, before playing a great ball into Hwang, who kept his shot low and gave Wolves the lead before the ten minute mark.
Wolves had full control of the game at this point, with Neto and Bellegarde coming close to doubling the hosts’ lead.
Neto was running the show, looking confident on the ball and showing signs of his previous form prior to injuries, crafting a chance for Matheus Cunha who unfortunately misjudged the flight of the ball and didn’t get a clean connection.
Despite this great first half display, just before the break Liverpool threatened with a cross from Andy Robertson cleared to Mohamed Salah’s feet. His attempt was blocked, however the danger was still not cleared, and the ball fell to their summer signing Dominik Szoboszlai. His shot was then saved by Jose Sa. It was a moment of madness at Molineux which had nearly cost Wolves the lead before the interval.
Liverpool made a couple of changes sending on Diaz and Nunez controlled the start of the second half, levelling the score just 10 minutes after play restarted. Jota poked the ball into Salah’s path, who moved forward before cutting the ball across goal, which was calmly put away by Gakpo.
From this moment, Wolves struggled to get back into the game, and Liverpool continued to apply pressure, with a shot from Nunez in the penalty area saved by Sa.
Doyle was handed his first appearance in a Wolves shirt, replacing Mario Lemina who was struggling with a knock. Boubacar Traore was also introduced.
Into the final 10 minutes, Sa attempted to launch a quick counter after claiming a corner, which was intercepted by Andy Robertson, who then executed an impressive one-two with Salah before slotting it away to make it 2-1 to the Reds.
Not long afterwards, any hope of a late equaliser from Wolves was trumped by an own goal by the unlucky Hugo Bueno, after he tried to block a shot from Harvey Elliott.
The final whistle blew leaving Wolves still yet to win at Molineux in the league this season. With Luton away on the horizon this weekend, they will be hoping to get a good result and deny the Hatters their first Premier League points in the club’s history.
