WATCH AS WE DISCUSS WOLVES 2-0 VICTORY AGAINST BURNLEY IN THE CARABAO CUP
Goncalo Guedes netted his first two goals for Wolves since January 2023, playing a crucial part in their victory over Burnley which pushed them into the Carabao Cup’s third round. The Portuguese forward, who recently enjoyed loan spells at both Benfica and Villarreal, opened the scoring by connecting with a well-timed cross from Brazilian newcomer Pedro Lima. His second goal came with a composed finish, as he latched onto a cleverly threaded through-ball from Daniel Podence and calmly slotted it past Burnley’s keeper, Vaclav Hladky. Guedes left the pitch to a standing ovation with 15 minutes still on the clock, highlighting his impact on the game.
Although some criticised Hladky for not doing better with the first goal, he had kept Burnley in the game earlier with an impressive double save. He blocked Podence’s curling effort and then managed to deflect Lima’s follow-up onto the post. Wolves faced a blow when midfielder Boubacar Traore went off injured late in the first half. This setback came just as news broke of Wolves being in advanced talks over a £21m transfer for Fluminense’s young midfielder, Andre. Looking ahead, Wolves will face a tricky test against Brighton in the third round next month.
Meanwhile, Burnley handed debuts to three players—Hannibal Mejbri, Bashir Humphreys, and Joe Worrall. However, Scott Parker’s Championship side found it tough to create any real threat, failing to record a shot on target. While the debuts might’ve brought some fresh energy, Burnley couldn’t translate that into attacking momentum. Can they regroup and find their stride as the season progresses?
