READ EXACTLY WHAT STRETCH THOUGHT OF WOLVES PERFORMANCE IN 5-3 LOSS TO BRENTFORD

Sam Johnstone 7

Made a number of good saves throughout the match and distribution was ok. Had no chance with any of the goals. There is a suspicion he does not leave his line enough but the protection he had in front of him was very poor.

Nelson Semedo 5

He was constantly outnumbered in the first half and was unable to stop the flow of crosses. Although he had an involvement in the first half he did little to impose himself going forward.

Rayan Ait-Nouri 7

As with Semedo outnumbered in the first half and could not stop the crosses being constantly fed in. Provided a decent threat from the left going forward providing a number  of crosses one of which led to the goal from Larsen. His positive contribution to the game including a late goal leaves him as the only member of the back four with any real credit.

Toti 4

Little in the way of defensive work or going forward. Caught ball watching on two of the goals and his general positional sense is worrying.

Craig Dawson 5

Steady but no sign of his organisation for the goals where there were huge gaps. Whilst individually there was not too much wrong as with Toti very few defensive contributions.

Andre 5

Brentford rarely went through the middle in the first half the area he was assigned to protect so his defensive role was limited. Started to get on the ball towards the end of the second half but withdrawn early in the second half.

Joao Gomes 4

Chasing shadows most of the half and found himself ahead of the ball too often. Not able to impose his combative side at all.

Mario Lemina 4

Unfortunately, it is just not happening for him at the moment his only contributions in the first half being to wrestle his opponent to concede a penalty and give the ball away easily which led directly to the third Brentford goal. Most of the half he was chasing shadows and just maybe the role of captain is seeing him trying to do too much. Seemed more comfortable in the deeper role once Andre departed.

Carlos Forbs 5

Made a good start and when he had possession used the ball well in the first half but largely dissapeared in the second and was rightly substituted. Some hopeful signs.

Matheus Cunha 6

Linked up quite well with Rayan Ait-Nouri and scored again. Had a few of his trademark runs but no real threat from any of them. Not finding much of a link with Larsen.

Jorgen Strand Larsen 6

Worked tirelessly pressing the defenders and battling for possession where he could. He was given one chance in the first half and he brilliantly put it away. The service to him was so limited there was very little he could do but another goal is good news moving forward

Substitutions

Hwang 1, Guedes 4 and Bellegarde 3 none of the substitutions made any impact but Guedes was easily the pick of them. There will rightly be huge annoyance at the first substitution being Hwang who has surely been the worst player this year and contributed nothing when he came on.

Reflections

Individually there were no awful displays but this was a collective disaster, certainly the worst performance this year. The defending of corners and crosses was really shocking and collectively we offered little resistance to Brentford. 5 goals was a fair reflection of how poor we defended as a team. With Man City next there has to be a defensive rethink although the solution is not obvious. The position of Gomes and Lemina need to be looked at and the centre half pairing does not seem to be strong enough.

This match will have dented the confidence more than any other this year.
