WOLVES FANS SHARE THEIR THOUGHTS ON WOLVES 2-0 CARABAO CUP WIN AGAINST EVERTON

CRAIG HICKEY

Well, well, well, that was better, still work to do but that should build some confidence in the group.

The set up was different, 4321 as I understood it, Krejci and Santi Bueno as the two centre backs seemed comfortable in the system, it did revert to a 541 in the latter stages but it was less nervy. Don’t get me wrong, there were moments of worrying but Johnstone was excellent tonight, only one misplaced pass…arghh.

A good finish from Munetsi and a world class one from Tolu, it’s made me a little more optimistic for the next games, I was livid Saturday until this win, just like everyone else. Kudos to Vitor and the team, you certainly brought some cheer to my Tuesday evening, I was not looking forward to it. Wolves ay We!!

JOHN TARAS

What a rare treat to be writing something positive for a change.

Tonights win was built on the solid foundations of the defence which previously had played like a sieve!
Sam Johnstone in goal had an excellent game making two brilliant saves and commanding his box.

In the back four Krejci marshalled a defence that had previously conceded goals from virtually every attack
This gave Santi Bueno confidence and they were ably supported by Doherty and Hugo Bueno.

Although they dealt with everything Everton threw at them and even stood up to the substitutions of  Grealish and Beto they stood firm.

But Wolves found attacks difficult to mount and the goal came from a piece of brilliance from Krejci who passed to Arias, he chased his header and sent a volley towards goal. Travers could only push the ball towards the wing and Munetsi swivelled before firing the ball home.

We’d been here before, Wolves defending for 45 minutes. I kept watching the time and willing every Everton attack to be thwarted. Sam Johnstone again saved Wolves diving down to his left to push a fierce shot away.

Vitor brought on Joao Gomes and Agbadou to bolster the team. Gomes slipped a pass through behind Keane and Tolu was off like a gazelle. As Travers came out Tolu dinked the ball over his shoulder into the net before racing away to celebrate.  That’s why we signed him and a new star was born.

Did I think we’d win 2-0, not a chance after last Saturday. But the lads tonight put in a far better performance.

Man of the match Krejci closely followed by Johnstone. Tottenham up on Saturday but for me the first name on the teamsheet at centre back is Krejci, also named as captain!

The stadium looked sparce tonight a sign that fans are discontented with things as they stand. Hopefully this may spur on the team to win their first league points.

A happier member, pleased with the performance given by tonights players.

KARL WHITEHOUSE

Went to the game hoping to see the team play better than the last game. With a different shape, we’ll see how it works out.

Surprised with the starting XI, with a suitable number of changes, plus taking out the players who are not performing.

For the first quarter of the game, it has been a confidence builder. Plenty of the ball, and the press has not been too bad without any mistakes. We need to switch the play more to our wing backs to expose the Everton backline.

Good team play from the lads for the opening goal shows what we can do when we create chances. Larsen gets them in a huddle after they scored, saying, more of the same, please.

One thing of note: we have not sat back since we scored, and we must keep up the pressure. We can produce good movement on the ball and stop the Everton press toward our goal. So far, so good.

Second half starts, we looked nervous, and the ball retention was not as good as the first half. But we are still in control of the game as Everton try to up the ante by bringing on their big-name players to cause issues. So far, so good; nothing to worry about.

What can we say about the goal of the game? A sublime finish by Tolu to open his account for the club. We deserved this after a good period of play, limiting Everton to shots from distance as our defence kept them out. We need to keep this up if we are going to get out of the situation we are in at this moment.

This has been a morale-boosting win for our side, where we did everything right. This side showed belief it can sort out the problems we have. Keep the faith, people. Vitor deserves credit tonight for getting the intensity into the team, and this was with a back four.

ANDREW BENNETT

What a feeling to write about a win, and a clean sheet!

A game of two halves, where in the first half without creating much Wolves did dominate the ball and special mention to Andre and Krejci who really looked comfortable in the new system in and out of possession.

The goal came from a good move whipping the ball into Arias who finally was playing in his correct position, the Colombian got a fierce strike off and Munetsi did well to fire home the winner. Otherwise a controlled half where Wolves handled a rather toothless Everton side until from a set play Johnstone was called upon, and throughout the game did his job well.

The second half was much different as Everton brought in their first team attacking players which saw Wolves sit deep and have to handle a lot of pressure. No combination of Wolves defenders so far this season has handled such players so it was great to see an organised shape limiting Everton to many clear chances.

Then when needed substitutes were made by Vitor and the side managed to offer more a threat going forward. Wolves were then rewarded with a great first goal by Tolu and put the tie out of reach for Everton. A lovely turnover and pass through by Joao Gomes saw the striker one on one with the keeper and the strike was taken brilliantly chipping Travers into the far corner.

A much needed win, a much needed clean sheet and Vitor showing something new when the side has looked hopeless.

FINLEY SMITH

A win that will give us confidence!

A well deserved win overall. First half we dominated them, Munetsi with a nice goal.
Second half they put us under pressure but we dealt well with it and saw it through.
Tolu with a lovely finish.

A battling performance from Wolves, a back 4 could actually work for us.

MOTM ~ Krejci
PERFORMANCE RATING ~ 6.5

Krejci organised that backline. What a player.
