Wolves 6-1 Shrewsbury: Walkover or Wake-Up Call at Molineux?

Wolves 6-1 Shrewsbury at Molineux on a snowy day,

A snowy, icy walk up to Molineux set the scene, but it was anything but cold inside. Wolves finally gave the home crowd something to shout about, putting six past Shrewsbury Town in the FA Cup third round. After a rough run in the league, this felt like a proper release.

Matchday mood: ice outside, goals inside

The big win came on a day when just getting the match on felt like a result. It was very icy around Wolverhampton, and credit went to Wolves for making sure the game went ahead.

Shrewsbury brought strong support too. It’s a local trip to a Premier League ground, and their fans turned up in numbers even with their own tough run in League Two.

How the 6-1 happened

Wolves started fast and burst the game open early.

Jørgen Strand Larsen got things moving, then Jhon Arias added another. At 2-0 inside 11 minutes, it felt like the visitors’ early hope disappeared quickly.

Then came the warning. Wolves got casual, started knocking it about, and were punished. Hwang lost the ball, Shrewsbury won a penalty, and they took it well to make it 2-1. It gave them a lift and knocked Wolves back for a spell, proof that switching off can bite at any level.

The killer moment followed when Shrewsbury’s keeper gifted the ball straight to Strand Larsen, who wasn’t going to miss. At 3-1, it looked done. Wolves added a fourth around the hour mark, changes were made, and Strand Larsen completed his hat-trick. Rodrigo Gomes also came on and got on the scoresheet, with Wolves fans getting their wish as the chant of “we want six” was answered.

Ratings, man of the match, and the honest verdict

There was a bit of debate about whether it was a “walkover”. Shrewsbury worked hard and put in some decent crosses, with Wolves defenders caught flat-footed at times. Still, 6-1 is a class gap on the day..

FA Cup magic, and what’s next

Wolves are into the fourth round, the “Abide With Me” dream lives on, and there was also a nod to Macclesfield Town from tier six knocking out Crystal Palace. That’s the FA Cup for you.

What did you make of the performance, and who was your man of the match?
