Last time Wolves beat Liverpool in FA Cup

Wolves 2 Liverpool 1 7th January 2019

Setting the scene

Wolves meet Liverpool in the third round of the competition. The last meeting was in 2017 in the fourth round, but Wolves were a Championship team then. Liverpool come to Molineux wanting revenge for their defeat at Anfield in the previous FA Cup meeting.

First half

Liverpool kick off under the lights at Molineux, but suffer an early blow just a few minutes in. Lovren goes down injured and eventually limps off, with Hoever coming on. He becomes Liverpool’s youngest ever player in the competition at 16 years old.

The match starts scrappily for both sides, with Wolves looking more threatening in terms of chances and opportunities.

Liverpool have a terrific chance to test goalkeeper Ruddy when Jones delivers from the left, but Ruddy catches it as it heads towards the forward line. Liverpool are using a high line at this point.

Shaqiri has the best moment of the half with the first real shot, dragging it just wide with the aid of a deflection, and Wolves are awarded a goal kick.

Wolves take the lead when Milner loses possession to Jota. Jimenez then races through in acres of space and shoots past Mignolet, after a spell of good pressure by Wolves.

This galvanises Wolves, who go hunting for another goal. Vinagre gets to the byline and crosses, but Fabinho clears. Shaqiri then shoots towards goal, but Moreno is flagged offside after a mistake by the Wolves defence.

Half-time: Wolves 1 Liverpool 0

Second half

Both teams make no changes and the tie remains finely poised.

Liverpool suddenly level the score when Wolves fail to clear their lines after Milner’s shot is blocked. Origi finds himself in space and hits a left-footed shot into the net past Ruddy, despite Liverpool having created limited chances.

It does not take long for Wolves to retake the lead. Neves, known for his goals from distance, catches out Mignolet from 25 yards. A mad five minutes of play, and the home fans celebrate a beautiful goal.

With Wolves on the front foot, they nearly get a third. Jimenez dispossesses Hoever, but runs out of room for a shot on goal.

Wolves grow in confidence, moving the ball well, while Liverpool warm up their big-name players to try and salvage the game.

Liverpool do bring on the big-name players in an attempt to equalise. They win a free kick in a dangerous position, which Shaqiri takes. He curls it towards goal and Ruddy tips it onto the woodwork. It flashes across the goal and out, so close to a leveller.

As the game heads towards the climax, Liverpool are wasteful with their chances. Camacho shoots wide, and Salah is involved with a cross to Fabinho, but it only reaches Ruddy.

Conclusion

Wolves hold on for the win, beating Liverpool, who cannot match Wolves’ intensity. Wolves also become the sixth Premier League side to exit the FA Cup this season.
