John Taras shares Five things we learned from Brentford 2-2 Wolves.

1. Poor defending let Wolves down

Wolves knew how Brentford would play. They move the ball from keeper to strikers quickly and directly. For twenty minutes Wolves were on the ball and matched Brentford.

But then old habits crept in, Wolves were caught cold from a fast cross and Kayode coming in unmarked at the back.
Hugo Bueno had gone to sleep, he left him to run in unchallenged. This was something that had repeatedly
got Wolves in trouble all season.

Worse was to come when a telegraphed long kick from Kelleher cleared everyone and Ouattara outpaced Mosquera and slipped a simple square ball for Thiago to tap in. Tchatchoua Wolves fastest defender had given up the chase when he should have won the race.

Two preventable goals and the outlook looked bleak.

2. Wolves still can’t cross the ball!

Wolves had five corners and numerous runs to the byline but the quality of crossing was abysmal. Both Hugo Bueno and Tchatchoua were guilty of poor crossing tonight. Free kicks are either cut out by the first defender or they are hit too long.

It’s a part of the game that has let them down all season. I cannot remember the last goal scored from a corner or a set piece. Going into the last seven games it must improve if Wolves are to get more wins.

3. Wolves looked outclassed!

I based this statement on the first 44 minutes until Wolves produced a classy move that started on the half way line and when Bellegarde slipped the ball through to the lively Armstrong just outside the box, he sidestepped and wrong footed the defence before smashing an unstoppable shot past Kelleher. Considering the skill shown to put away the goal the Wolves celebrations were muted.

Rob Edwards took off Mane at half time and brought on Angel Gomes, it was a game changer.

The second half saw Wolves perform like a top six side and they battered Brentford. The game could quite easily have ended with a Wolves victory but they had to settle for a draw. In the end it was Brentford hanging on as Wolves played them off the park at time in the second half.

4. Wolves have two strikers who can score goals!

Adam Armstrong came to Wolves with a reputation of being capable of scoring goals. But until today he’d been more of a striker used as a player whose task was to close down the opposition. Any service he got was normally in the air! Complete waste of his abilities. Wolves learnt today that if you give him the right service he will score.

His goal today was all on the ground. Bellegarde played him in onto a ball that he chased down, wrong footed two defenders and then left Kelleher no chance from twenty yards. He hit the post from a second chance again with a ball on the ground passed to him square of the goal. He beat the defender to the ball and his shot unluckily came back off the post to safety.

Tolu Arokadare replaced Bellegarde on 74 minutes and instantly gave Brentford a headache with his hold up play and aerial threat.

His goal came from a cross by Joao Gomes that bounced up in the box. For a big man Tolu got in front of the defender and planted his header wide of Kelleher.

Wolves suddenly realised they had an aerial threat. From the only really decent cross all match Tolu got in between the two Centre backs but his header beat Kelleher but came back off the bar.
Wolves two strikers could have finished with four goals instead of only two. But they showed the fans that there will be more goals from these two strikers before the season ends.

5. Ticket Prices

Wolves fans found out this week that Nathan Shi has come out and promised Season Ticket reductions for next season. The figures being quoted are 25%. This move should ensure a good response from Ticket Holders come renewal time. It is hoped that the full allocation will be taken up. It is about time the Board listened to the Fans comments and acted accordingly.

Final Thoughts

Sadly only a draw today which still leaves Wolves with a virtually impossible task of avoiding relegation. But after the change in performance in the second half a win would have not been unfair.
Wolves have seven games left, some games against their fellow bottom teams even 18 points might not be enough!

What might have been?
