LIAM BERRY LOOKs AT WHAT MATHEUS NUNES WILL BRING TO THE WOLVES SIDE

Reports emerging from multiple reliable outlets suggest that Wolves have completed the signing of highly rated Portuguese midfielder Matheus Nunes.

The 23-year-old has been at Sporting CP for over three years starting out with the Under 23s, before making the step up to the first team in 2020.

The fee to bring him in is reported to be £45million plus £5million in add-ons, which would make him the club’s record signing.

What type of player is he?

Standing at 6ft, Nunes is a very physical player, he uses his strength to shield the ball in tight spaces which allows him to drive the ball forwards.

His ball carrying skills are sublime, with a 67% dribble succession rate. Which is a trait Wolves have lacked from central midfield in the past years.

In games, he drifts wide whilst moving up the pitch, finding the spaces and using them to his advantage. This could become a feature of Wolves’ play as he can interchange with the likes of Morgan Gibbs-White and Pedro Neto to link play and also get crosses into the box from wide positions.  Often he is seen taking one or two players out of the game with his dribbling.

He is also not shy of getting in on the goals – in two games he has one goal and one assist – and for a side who have been toothless in front of goal so far this season, this could prove to be a massive coup for Wolves if they pull it off.

His goalscoring could be a game changer, and with a poor scoring rate over the last couple of seasons, Nunes could be the missing piece in the jigsaw to make this Wolves side click.

Along with these attributes, Nunes is a great passer of the ball, with a whopping 90% completion rate.

Man City manager Pep Guardiola has the described the player as ‘one of the best in the world’, so that gives you that extra bit of clarity on what Wolves are bringing in.

With all these factors to take in, Wolves could be getting a potential world class midfielder who would fit the style of play manager Bruno Lage is after.

PUSH FOR EUROPE?

Nunes is a great player, and has not only performed in the Portuguese league, he has done it in the Champions League.

If Nunes was to join Wolves and bolster their midfield, this would be a massive boost for the West Midlands side.

With coming close last season to a top six push before falling away, Wolves missed out. But with the additions they have brought in, along with Nunes, there could be a genuine feeling that they could go further this year and knock on doors of the top six.
