BATTLING WOLVES EARN REPLAY AGAINST BRENTFORD IN THE CUP

Liam berry reports on Wolves battle at Brentford to earn a replay in the FA Cup.

Wolves made their travels back to Gtech Community Stadium for the second time in a few weeks, this time to face them in the FA Cup.

Daniel Bentley, Craig Dawson and Hugo Bueno did not travel with the squad to the capital, said to be with some minor injuries, nothing thought to be serious with the three of them.

With Hwang Hee Chan, Rayan Ait-Nouri and Boubacar Traore unavailable due to their international duties, Wolves made three changes from the team that started against Everton, with Matt Doherty, Jean-Ricner Bellegarde and Santiago Bueno coming into the team.

Thomas Frank made four changes however, bringing in Thomas Strakosha, Mikkel Damsgaard, Josh Dasilva and Neal Maupay for Mark Flekken, Vitaly Janelt, Yoane Wissa and Saman Ghoddos.

FIRST HALF

Wolves started the game with an early chance, with the high press in full use, a sloppy pass from Brentford saw Matheus Cunha with a chance in the box to open the scoring, unfortunately his shot was hesitated and failed to capitalise.

Just nine minutes into the game, Wolves were dealt a blow when Joao Gomes was sent off for a reckless challenge on Christian Norgaard, who was unable to continue afterwards.

Wolves then had to survive with 10 men for a large portion of the game, and nearly went a goal down when Toti Gomes’ deflection nearly diverted into his own net.

Tommy Doyle was then caught by Damsgaard by a nasty challenge, controversially this was not deemed a red card.

Despite Brentford putting on the pressure, Wolves still looked a threat going forward, with Toti meeting a Pablo Sarabia free kick, but his attempt was not on target.

Brentford found the opener, with a free kick on the edge of the box whipped into the penalty area. The ball bounced between both sets of players but ended up sitting nicely for Maupay to smash it in the top corner.

Going into half time Wolves were a man down and a goal down.

SECOND HALF

Wolves started the second half positively, constructing more dangerous attacks and playing with a bit more belief.

Their efforts were rewarded with a stunning strike from Tommy Doyle on the edge of the box, following a short corner which was laid off by Pedro Neto, his eighth assist this season. Doyles first goal at Wolves proved to be an important one.

Wolves continued to put on pressure, with another shot from Doyle blocked.

However Brentford worked their way back into the game using their numerical advantage.

A moment of madness when Brentford’s Keane Lewis-Potter seemingly grabbed Nelson Semedo’s throat. This resulted in both players being booked but more controversy that the Brentford player wasn’t dismissed at this point.

Wolves defence held out and they take the replay back to Molineux.
