THERE'S MUCH SPECULATION ABOUT THE FUTURE OF MATHEUS CUNHA BUT WHEN THE WINDOW CLOSES AT 11PM ON FEBRUARY 3RD CUNHA MUST STILL BE A WOLVES PLAYER
Wolves are facing significant pressure as rival Premier League clubs show interest in Matheus Cunha. With rumours of record bids and glowing reports surrounding him, selling Cunha simply cannot be an option. He has been instrumental in our relegation battle, and his contributions are almost irreplaceable. Thankfully, the club reportedly remains relaxed about the speculation, given Cunha’s contract still has 2.5 years left. The new deal on the table for Cunha reflects just how highly Wolves value his performances, rewarding him rather than suggesting any concerns about his future.
Beyond his importance to survival, selling Cunha in this window would undoubtedly trigger uproar from the fans, who see him as the heartbeat of this side. Here’s why Wolves cannot afford to let our star man leave.
The Importance of Matheus Cunha to Wolves
Matheus Cunha’s value to Wolves cannot be overstated. His impact in attack is unmatched, and his consistency, skill, and leadership make the difference in the fight to remain in the Premier League. The stats don’t just tell a story—they scream his importance.
Direct Involvement in Our Attack
Cunha has been directly involved in 44% of our Premier League goals this season—a staggering contribution. Losing a player of his calibre would immediately weaken our chances of survival. He isn’t just a scorer; he’s a chance creator, a dribbler, and the creative spark in our attack.
When you look at the numbers every club craves in a top attacker, Cunha tops them all:
- Most goals scored for Wolves this season.
- Most dribbles completed, showing his ability to drive past defenders.
- Most chances created in the squad.
- 11 big chances created—which is more than the next three best Wolves players combined.
In addition, Cunha has been directly involved in 75% of our game-winning goals this season. His contributions have been decisive, often turning potentially lost points into vital results. Without him, where would we be?
Versatility and Tactical Influence
Cunha offers much more than just attacking output. His versatility allows him to play as a striker, second forward, or wide attacker. This adaptability makes him the focal point of our attack, letting us adjust tactics depending on the opposition. His movement, intelligence, and ability to create space for others are what make Wolves tick offensively.
Leadership and On-Field Presence
At 25, Cunha has already become a leader on the pitch. Whether it’s lifting spirits during tough moments, pressing relentlessly, or leading by example, he brings an energy that inspires the team. He may not wear the captain’s armband, but his influence is undeniable in every game he plays.
Fan Uproar if Sold
Cunha represents our best hope of staying in the Premier League. Losing him now would feel like the club throwing in the towel during a crucial relegation battle. For fans, it’s unthinkable to let our best player leave at such a pivotal time. Any sale would likely lead to outrage, sending a message of prioritising financials over survival. Wolves cannot afford to lose Cunha when the stakes are this high.
Relegation Battle
We’re in a dogfight to stay in the Premier League. Relegation would cost Wolves over £100 million in television revenues, sponsorships, and matchday income. At a time when every competitive edge is crucial, losing Cunha would be an enormous setback.
Replacing Cunha
If Wolves sold Cunha, replacing his contributions would be an enormous challenge:
- Big Transfer Fees: Proven, Premier League-ready attackers cost upwards of £50 million, and that’s just for potential replacements. Selling him for anything below £80 million wouldn’t cover the cost of adequately replacing him.
- Adjustment Risks: New signings often take time to adapt, and we don’t have the luxury of waiting for someone to settle into Premier League life.
- Squad Depth: Replacing Cunha with one player wouldn’t solve our depth issues. It would leave little to no room for injuries, form struggles, or suspensions in a long, hard fight for survival.
The New Contract
Cunha’s current contract, with 2.5 years left, gives Wolves leverage. The club has reportedly offered him a new deal as a reward for his outstanding contributions, and it’s said to be close to being signed. This new agreement reinforces our commitment to Cunha, and rightly so—keeping him shows ambition and belief.
Why Wolves Are Standing Firm
By placing an £80 million price tag on Cunha, Wolves are sending a clear statement. This isn’t just about financial value—it reflects how crucial Cunha is to our success. The valuation is bold and reflects our intent to resist selling under pressure. Also we have to remember that Wolves initially paid £45m for Cunha and would need to see a substantial return to even consider an offer for him.
For Wolves, staying in the Premier League is more important than any short-term gain from a transfer fee. The financial and reputational damage of relegation would far outweigh any money generated from selling Cunha mid-season.
Conclusion
Matheus Cunha is Wolves’ most influential player, directly involved in 44% of our goals and driving our attack with unmatched consistency. Losing a player who leads in every key attacking metric while contributing to 75% of our game-winning goals would put our Premier League survival in serious jeopardy.
The new contract offered to Cunha rightly rewards his contributions and shows commitment to keeping him at Wolves. Selling now would provoke outrage among fans and send the wrong message about our ambitions. As supporters, we can clearly see that Cunha isn’t just one of the players—he’s the player keeping our survival hopes alive. Holding on to Cunha is not just a choice—it’s essential for our future.

Can’t fault a word of that. You rightly point out the outrage amongst fans, not just for the financial gain and league sacrifice if the powers that be decide the money is too good to turn down. He’s a fan favourite and rightly so. Every time I see him play, he makes things happen, whether they end up in the back of the net or not. He also has that affinity with the fans, with us.
Letting the heartbeat of our team go for any amount of money would be like hearing the death knell for our future in staying a premier league team this season.
To Matheus Cunha, if you read articles where you are the focus, and the comments associated. Please keep this journey going.
