JOSE SA 8
With only three shots on target and no chance with either of the goals, there was actually little for Sa to do. However, he dealt well with what came his way. His distribution was strong, generally making the right decisions. He lost the ball under his feet in injury time, which was a heart-in-mouth moment, but he recovered just in time. Then, of course, there was the crucial penalty save, for which his game-changing action deserves an 8.
NELSON SEMEDO 7
Largely untroubled defensively and certainly helped by the solid Doherty behind him, Son on his side had little impact and was withdrawn fairly early. He made a considerable contribution to Wolves’ attacking play, and the wide, advanced role certainly suits him – 7.
MATT DOHERTY 7
Solid and unflappable, he performed his role admirably. The connection in both directions with Semedo is really working. He made an excellent header late on that could have won it – 7.
SANTI BUENO 7
A centre-half that goes unnoticed is usually a good sign, and another performance like this from Bueno is making him a key player, particularly given the injuries. He did everything asked of him with no mistakes. He made a good covering clearance as the last man, although, in truth, the ball was going wide, but he had no way of knowing that – 7.
CRAIG DAWSON 6
Dawson has seemed off the pace for a few games, but it’s too early to write him off; he remains a solid centre-back. However, because of Toti’s injury, he was forced onto the left side of defence, which did not suit him and made him look awkward with the ball at his feet. Most of the threat from Spurs came from that side, but that was more a reflection of Kulusevski, who was by far the best player for Spurs – 6.
Rayan Ait-Nouri 8
Worked tirelessly to get back and help out the defence while making a considerable impact going forward. He posed a significant threat by getting behind Spurs’ defence and was rewarded with two assists. More measured than his usual flamboyance, it was his best game for some time – 8.
João Gomes 7
He covered every inch of grass in midfield, the very definition of a midfield dynamo. Without being overly creative, he handled the ball calmly and consistently kept possession. His partnership with Andre is really blossoming – 7.
Andre 7
This guy has considerable ability, and it is beginning to show. Like Gomes, he is a real terrier in midfield, and Spurs rarely had any time in this crucial area of the pitch. His distribution is uncomplicated and effective – 7.
Matheus Cunha 6
After his sensational performance against United, it’s hard to judge a normal performance. He played his part but had little significant impact. He was injured and substituted at half-time, likely due to the knock he picked up earning the free kick that led to the goal. He could well have been struggling with the impact of the knock relatively early on – 6.
Hwang Hee-Chan 7
An unexpected start ahead of Larsen, he naturally worked hard to close players down. His best performance this year was capped by an excellent finish from a well-worked free kick – 7.
Jean-Ricner Bellegarde 6
I’m still struggling to work out whether this player is good enough or not. He certainly makes some eye-catching moments, but is it enough? A surprise choice ahead of Guedes. Presumably, he was tactically substituted at half-time – 6.
Substitutes
Larsen and Guedes came on at half-time, which certainly improved the team’s performance, and of course, Larsen scored a stunning winner. Doyle, Gomes, and Forbs all did okay with their cameo appearances.
Team and Manager
Some unexpected selections and excellent substitutions added up to a great away point at Spurs. Unlike the Cunha show against United, this was a real team effort, with everyone playing their clearly defined roles and no individuals really standing out. Only Dawson, forced out of position by circumstance, fell a little short. We looked like a team that knew what they were doing – 7.
