Wolves’ outstanding preseason results continued in Alicante, when the team defeated Besiktas by 3 goals.
Two weeks remain until the 2022–23 Premier League season kicks off, so Wolves stepped up their preseason efforts. Many of their players endured 85 minutes in the Spanish heat, and their team prevailed thanks to goals from Raul Jimenez, Daniel Podence, and Pedro Neto in the first half.
In contrast to their dominating performance against Deportivo Alaves on Wednesday night, Wolves were unable to get off to a strong start against Besiktas.
Jackson Smith, a product of the Wolves Academy, made a fantastic stop to prevent Besiktas from grabbing the lead after a long-range free-kick appeared to catch him off guard.
However, Jimenez was not to be stopped by another Besiktas goalkeeper Ersin error. The Mexican defender pounced after the Turkish goalkeeper mishit a back pass, turning the ball into an open goal.
Before halftime, Wolves were dealt a blow when Jimenez, who was receiving treatment during the water break, had to leave the field due to an injury. Bruno Lage then turned to Leander Dendoncker to bolster the midfield while Podence shifted to the front three because Wolves didn’t have another striker on the bench.
The high press caused confusion in the Besiktas defence, allowing Neto to reach a ball slotted in between the lines before it reached Ersin skipping past the keeper and turning the ball into the net.
Wolves continue to look well-drilled and Bruno was able to give time to some of the under 21s to close out the game 3-0.
