Wolves welcome deadline day signing Nasser Djiga, here's everything you need to know.

Wolverhampton Wanderers have made a bold move to strengthen their defence by signing 22-year-old Burkina Faso international, Nasser Djiga, on the final day of the transfer window. Djiga joins from Red Star Belgrade on a contract that runs until 2030, with an additional 12-month option.

A Rising Star’s Journey

Djiga’s football journey began in Burkina Faso with Vitesse FC, where he captured his first silverware. His talent soon caught the attention of European clubs, leading to a move to the Swiss Super League with FC Basel in 2021. At Basel, he gained experience both domestically and in the Europa Conference League before taking his talents on loan.

In France, Djiga made a significant impact at Nîmes, where he played 22 matches during his loan spell. Following a brief return to Basel, the young defender transitioned to Red Star Belgrade in the Serbian SuperLiga. His time at Red Star proved pivotal as he clinched the Serbian SuperLiga and Serbian Cup double while also featuring in the UEFA Champions League, including matches against Manchester City.

A Key Asset at Red Star

After a successful loan, Djiga completed a permanent transfer to Red Star Belgrade last summer. He became one of the cornerstones of their defence, starting all eight European fixtures and contributing to the club’s unbeaten domestic record in the first half of the current campaign, with only one draw.

Statements from Wolves Leadership

Wolves chairman Jeff Shi expressed excitement about Djiga’s arrival, stating, “We’re delighted to welcome Nasser to the club. This signing took hard work from a number of people, and we’re looking forward to seeing Nasser become integrated into the Wolves family. Supporting our manager this window was essential, and the acquisition of Nasser represents a strong investment in the club’s future.”

Sporting director Matt Hobbs emphasized the strategic importance of bolstering Wolves’ defensive options, adding, “Central defence is an area we’ve been looking to strengthen this window, and Nasser is a player we believe can help us both in the short and long term. His speed and aggression fit well within our system, and we’re eager to see him fight for his place in the squad.”

Looking Forward

Nasser Djiga’s signing signals Wolves’ commitment to building a formidable defensive unit. With his proven track record in top European leagues and his potential for further growth, Djiga offers both immediate impact and long-term value for the club. Fans will be eager to see him integrate into the squad and contribute to Wolves’ ambitions in the Premier League.
