Finley Smith shares his thoughts following that painful defeat at the Etihad
Man City starting XI: Ederson, Walker, Akanji, Ake, Gardiol, Rodrigo, Kovacic, De Bruyne, Foden, Bernardo, Haaland.
Wolves starting XI: Sa, Semedo, Toti, Kilman, H.Bueno, Traore, Gomes, Lemina, Ait Nouri, Hwang, Cunha.
First half:
Wolves kick the game off and try to start on the front foot, catching City on the break. A few early crosses into the box from Wolves but no end product.
Manchester City are using their experience and strength to keep frustrating Wolves. Going to the Etihad Stadium was always going to be a tough task for Wolves to really get anything out of the game. Many fans were thinking that maybe Wolves could cause an upset or at least get something from the games?
In the 12th minute, Man City are awarded a controversial penalty with many Wolves fans not happy. Haaland comfortably slots it away. 1-0 City.
Wolves go behind away at City and we feel llike twe’re in for a rough ride. In the 35th minute, Haaland scores from Rodri’s assist after Cunha sloppily gave the ball away making it 2-0.
Wolves now have a mountain to climb. Wolves fans hope it will just be a 2-0 going into halftime until another decision goes against Wolves from Semedo’s foul. We hope for no red cards but City are given another penalty and Haaland is already on a hat-trick.

Second half:
Manchester City kick off the second half, and Wolves have some possession and control in the Manchester City box. In the 53rd minute, Bellegarde crosses a decent ball into the box, which goes past everyone but Hwang, who finishes it off from the back post and Wolves have got on the scoreboard.
At this moment in the game, Wolves fans hoped to see more from their team and not be on the receiving end of such a thrashing. However, Manchester City have just been too good for Wolves. Haaland impressively finishes it off in the bottom left-hand corner from Foden’s assist. 4-1 to City.
Even though Wolves were down 4-1, the fans cheered like a goal was scored when they were awarded a free-kick. However, there was no outcome from it. Wolves were expected to lose, and the fans thought it would just be a 4-1 defeat until Alvarez slots it away in the 84th minute to make it 5-1 to City. The 90th minute arrives, and there are 4 minutes of added time.
FULL TIME MANCHESTER CITY 5-1 WOLVES.
TO CONCLUDE
My thoughts on the game were that coming to Man City at the Etihad Stadium was always going to be extremely tough.
Especially having early decisions against you put a negative effect on the game. Manchester City had a quite comfortable afternoon. Gary O’Neil with these subs, Bellegarde, Sarabia and Chirewa, made a bit more attacking threat and Santi Bueno in defence to try and strengthen it up a bit.
Man of the Match – Sa
Performance Rating – 5 for the effort at such a tough place to go.
